The young Robin Williams was a manic comic, shooting off bizarre but hilarious improvisations like a Fourth of July sparkler. He wrote and performed for The Richard Pryor Show, a brilliant but censor-saddled sketch comedy show that lasted just four episodes in 1977 before NBC pulled the plug. In 1978 Williams made a guest appearance on Happy Days, playing the space alien Mork from Ork. This quickly led to his own sitcom, Mork & Mindy, co-starring Pam Dawber.
His first big-screen role was the perplexing Popeye, with Robert Altman directing a screenplay by Jules Feiffer, music and lyrics by Harry Nilsson, Shelley Duvall perfect as Olive Oyl and Williams giving a spot-on rendition of the spinach-eatin' sailor's hug-gug-gug. In his second film, Williams played T. S. Garp in an enjoyable albeit saccharin and sentimental adaptation of John Irving's The World According to Garp, and he has been an irrepresible comedy fixture ever since. His better films include Moscow on the Hudson, Good Morning, Vietnam, Dead Poets Society, Awakenings, The Fisher King, Aladdin, Mrs. Doubtfire, and, if you have a high tolerance for schmaltz, Patch Adams.
As Williams' youth has faded and his fans have grown older, the audience for his wacky comedy has ebbed. The same schtick that seemed cute and mischievous in his mid-20s, ŕ la Mork & Mindy, can seem a little sad when it's performed by someone in his 40s or 50s (see Flubber). So Williams has tiptoed away from comedic films, and seems to see himself as a 'serious' actor now, headlining somewhat overwrought melodramas like One Hour Photo and Insomnia. He won an Oscar as Matt Damon's psychologist in Good Will Hunting.
Williams was reportedly one of the last people to see John Belushi alive, as they snorted cocaine together. An '80s live-in girlfriend of Williams, cocktail waitress Michelle Tish Carter, sued Williams in 1986, claiming she had contracted herpes from him. She demanded $6.2 million, and the suit was settled in 1992 when Williams forked over an undisclosed amount. Williams was a good friend of Christopher Reeve, but there's no truth to the talk that Williams picked up the tab for years of Reeve's medical expenses.
Williams still does stand-up, often headlining "Comic Relief" events for charity, and donating his services for liberal fundraising events. He was an outspoken critic of President George W. Bush. Phoebe Cates is a movie star who filmed her most famous performance in her second film, when she was 18 and memorably stepped out of the pool and out of her bikini in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. It has been called one of the sexiest moments in any mainstream movie.
Her father, Joseph Cates, was the producer of the original $64,000 Question and Tic Tac Dough. In 2001 she also broke into TV when she was cast as Asha Barlow in the second season of FOX's hit sci-fi show Dark Angel. It was her first real acting role. Her character was an ally to cyber journalist Logan Cale (Michael Weatherly) and part of a group formed to expose government corruption. The Dark Angel people liked her enough to try to revise the formerly bookish character to fit Ashley's personality and they also quickly upgraded her from a guest star to a cast member.
In February 2002, while still featured in her recurring role on Dark Angel, the announcement came that she was cast as Helena Kyle a.k.a the Huntress (a superhero) in the pilot for the possible upcoming WB series about post-Batman Gotham and a trio of female crime fighters known as the Birds of Prey (a series loosely based on the DC comic of the same name). Ashley did do most of her own stunt work for the pilot episode of Birds of Prey.
She gained a few fans as Huntress in the WB's Birds of Prey in the Fall of 2002, but that show unfortunately had a short run and ended mid-season. Ashley followed her work on Birds of Prey with feature films and has been in such films as S.W.A.T., Trespassing, Walking Tall, and Into the Blue.
She was originally cast in the pilot of the NBC Matt LeBlanc sitcom Joey in 2004, but she was replaced by Andrea Anders. She had a minor role in the movie Just Friends (2005), as a nurse. From 2006 to 2008 she played Emily Sullivan in the CBS drama Jericho, during its entire two season run.

The last hope for goodness and purity in the pop music world (work that one out), Jessica Simpson first began to publically perform -- where else? -- at the Baptist church where her father was youth minister. Although rejected by the Great Satanic Mickey Mouse Club, and temporarily hindered when an independent gospel label failed to follow through with a planned release, Simpson continued to pursue her hopes for a singing career, touring the Christian Youth Coalition circuit and selling copies of a family-financed gospel collection. The album attracted the attention of Sony Records CEO Tommy Mottola, who, in the guise of a snake (well, not really) enticed Simpson away from the path of righteousness and into the valley of the shadow of secular music. The result was the 1999 Columbia release Sweet Kisses, which met with reasonable success.
The 2001 follow-up release Irresistible, saw Simpson in competition with fellow teen idols Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, who had by that time abandoned their squeaky-pop images and launched into sex kitten mode. The Simpson camp has always maintained a clear distiction between Jessica and her randy counterparts -- emphasizing her religious background, unshakeable belief in pre-marital abstinence, and refusal to use sex to boost her career. This is no doubt conveyed to her audience by the obviously chaste nature of her skin-tight, midriff-baring outfits, as opposed to the lewd and unrighteous nature of the other pop stars' skin-tight, midriff-baring outfits.
While on tour with boy band 98 Degrees to support her first album, Simpson was introduced to her future ex-husband Nick Lachey, with whom she was featured in the "reality" TV series Newlyweds. Hanks's parents divorced when he was very young, and he was raised by his father, a chef who often moved in pursuit of work. Hanks went to five different elementary schools, and grew up a shy child. He reinvented himself as a class clown in high school, and eventually took drama classes and began appearing in school plays.
His first film was 1980's He Knows You're Alone, a deservedly forgotten thriller, and his crossdressing sitcom Bosom Buddies with Peter Scolari was cancelled quickly. His second film was Splash, a silly but sweet story of inter-species romance, with Daryl Hannah, and John Candy. For several years after Splash, Hanks continued as a comedic actor -- Big, The 'burbs, A League of Their Own. Hanks took more serious work in the 1990s, winning Oscars for Philadelphia and Forest Gump. He played astronaut Jim Lovell in Apollo 13, and was praised for Saving Private Ryan and The Green Mile. From Saving Private Ryan to Catch Me If You Can, he had seven consecutive films that broke the $100 million "blockbuster" barrier. He reportedly demands $25 million per movie.
As a producer, Hanks delivered the top-notch HBO mini-series From the Earth to the Moon and Band of Brothers, and Nia Vardalos' indie hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding. In 2003, the contractor who built Hanks' remote, sprawling Idaho mansion and compound, including several guesthouses, filed a lawsuit to collect $1.75 million in allegedly unpaid fees. Hanks responded by threatening a countersuit, pointing out that their contract specified that any disputes would be resolved through confidential, binding arbitration, a clause specifically intended to deflect any potential for bad press. The court records were promptly sealed, the matter went to arbitration, and the following year a spokesman for the construction company said he was "thrilled" with the arbitrators' decision, but forbidden to comment further.
I love what I do for a living, it's the greatest job in the world, but you have to survive an awful lot of attention that you don't truly deserve and you have to live up to your professional responsibilities and I'm always trying to balance that with what is really important.

After high school, Kevin Bacon worked Philadelphia's Manning Street Actor's Theatre, and from there to New York's Circle-in-the-Square Theater School. In his first film role, he was "Chip" in Animal House, being spanked as part of his initiation. Richard Starkey Jr. was an only child of English working-class parents. His father left the family when Ringo was three, and young Starkey endured a somewhat sickly childhood with recurring bouts of tuberculosis. He got his first set of drums at 13, and dropped out of school at 15. After that, Starr worked as a delivery man and drummed for Rory Storm & The Hurricanes. He was hired to replace drummer Pete Best as the fourth and final Beatle, and alongside John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison. Despite the band's phenomenal success, Starr has been described as a merely adequate drummer. He sang on only a handful of their songs -- "Yellow Submarine", "With a Little Help from My Friends" -- and wrote only two of their songs, "Octopus' Garden" and "Don't Pass Me By".
After the Beatles broke up, Starr had solo hits including "It Don't Come Easy", "Photograph", "You're 16", and "Oh My My", while doing the occasional light acting. He narrated the delightful Harry Nilsson cartoon The Point, then produced Son of Dracula film starring Nilsson as the Count and Starr as Merlin the Magician. Starr co-starred in Mae West's last film, Sextette, and starred in the Caveman with Dennis Quaid, Shelley Long, and Barbara Bach. Bach and Starr were married in 1981. He played the Mock Turtle in a 1986 BBC telemovie of Alice in Wonderland. He was the train's conductor on Shining Time Station in 1990 and 1991, until he was replaced by George Carlin.
Starr tours with his All Starr Band, with a varying lineup that has included Peter Frampton, Jack Bruce, Colin Hay, Paul Carrack, Mark Rivera, and Sheila E, as well as Ringo's drummer son Zak.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America
hen in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. At three, Lindsay Lohan was a working model. As a kid she appeared in ads for dozens of products from Pizza Hut to the Gap, and co-starred with Bill Cosby in a Jell-O commercial. At six, she was one of the trick-or-treaters who rang David Letterman's doorbell on a Halloween Late Show. Her costume was made from garbage allegedly found on the D-train, and Letterman gave her a garden hose. At ten, Lohan was a semi-regular on the soap opera Another World, as Alexandra "Ally" Fowler. The following year, she made her motion picture debut as twins in Disney's 1998 remake of The Parent Trap with Dennis Quaid.
After a few years' break from her career, Lohan moved to Los Angeles without her parents, and for a while shared an apartment with actress Raven-Symoné. Lohan briefly dated babyfaced actor Aaron Carter, until she learned he was also dating Hilary Duff. Duff and Lohan feuded loudly about that for months, before Lohan decided that the whole rivalry was rather "high school".
She re-teamed with Disney for another hit remake, Freaky Friday with Jamie Lee Curtis, and in Tina Fey's Mean Girls she played a high school girl drifting toward bitchdom. In January 2007 she was briefly hospitalized for an appendectomy, her publicist said, and seen partying til dawn the day after her alleged surgery. Even Tara Reid has told reporters "Lindsay Lohan is way more wild than I was when I was her age."
Through the spring and summer of 2005 Lohan appeared excessively thin, triggering speculation of anorexia or bulimia. Lohan denied any problem, but after several months she urged young girls to "learn from my mistakes", and admitted to a bout with bulimia. She then demanded a retraction, claiming the quote had been fabricated by reporters at Vanity Fair, but the magazine had the interview on tape.
In November 2006, perhaps unclear on the concept of "anonymous", both Lohan's publicist and her mother told the press that the actress had been attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Her mother, however, stressed that Lohan was not an alcoholic, but only attended meetings to show her support for her friends. In January 2007, about five months before she would be old enough to legally drink alcoholic beverages, Lohan checked into a Los Angeles rehab center. She was back in rehab that summer.
In May 2005 she was in an auto wreck, and said her car was forced off the road by paparazzi pursuing her. Weeks later she said she had almost been in a second accident caused by media hounding. In October 2005, with no reporters nearby, she was in an accident in Beverly Hills. In November 2006, again reportedly being pursued by photographers, she crashed her car in Los Angeles, then told reporters later that she feared she would "end up like Princess Diana". A week and a half later she was in London with Calum Best, son of soccer star George Best, when their vehicle rammed into a police car. In March 2007 Lohan struck a photographer with her BMW in Los Angeles. In May 2007 Lohan's Mercedes was in a fender-bender on Sunset Boulevard, and she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of cocaine. In July 2007, two weeks after finishing her second stint in rehab, she was arrested again, for drunk driving and possession of cocaine.
Lohan's father has reportedly threatened to kill Lohan and her mother, and demanded millions in alimony as he divorced her mother -- "his share" of his daughter's earnings. He was arrested several times after his daughter became famous, once for pummeling her uncle with a shoe at communion, once for drunk driving, and twice for violating an order of protection taken out by Lohan's mother. In 2005 he pled guilty to drunk driving, attempted assault, aggravated harassment and criminal contempt, and was sentenced to four years in prison. After almost two years at the Collins Correctional Facility near Buffalo, NY, he was released in March 2007. During his jail time he found the Lord and became an ordained minister.
